Champion Awards to the Western States:
We were pleased to recognize several of the states participating at our “Best of the West” conference this year for their exceptional efforts to champion campaigns that led to state-wide smoke-free initiatives. These laws represent successful efforts to prohibit tobacco use in a variety of public spaces, including, but not limited to restaurants, bars, and other populated venues. The states honored include Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, and New Mexico for the successful passage of smoke-free laws within their states in 2006. Such efforts were not accomplished alone, but rather with the combined talent, hard-work, and perseverance of many individuals and organizations.
First honored was the keynote speaker 17th U.S. Surgeon General, Dr. Richard Carmona for publishing the 2006 Surgeon General’s Report: entitled “The Health Consequences of Involuntary Exposure to Tobacco Smoke: A Report of the Surgeon General” (2006)

Worksite of the Year Award:
The CTFA Worksite Award is designed to recognize exceptional leadership in the field of tobacco prevention, cessation, and the creation of tobacco free environments. Specifically, the CTFA Worksite Award honors an organization/business that has demonstrated exemplary efforts to become a tobacco-free environment for its employees and the individuals it serves. Such worksite not only complies with established Smoke Free laws, but stands out as a model of excellence within the community.
2007 Winner-AT Still University has implemented a strong tobacco free policy for all its (medical and allied healthcare professional) students and staff. This includes no smoking in all buildings, parking lots, or grounds.
Other Nominees:
Waste Management aims to help their employees live healthier, happier lives. They offer montary incentives to employees and their families to quit tobacco and also to remain tobacco-free. They offer behavioral counseling as well as medications to assist them quit. These services among other progressive health initiatives are a model for all worksites.
Hospice of Arizona has created a supportive, health oriented workplace by providing onsite tobacco cessation classes, reduced insurance premiums, and incorporating a wellness program to support overall employee health.
