2007 Coalition for Tobacco-Free Arizona
|
These victims are replaced everyday as the tobacco industry convinces approximately 3,000 children to become new smokers. Thousands of casualties are added to the death toll each year as infants, youth and adults suffer and die from exposure to other people’s tobacco smoke. That is why the Arizona Hospital and Health Care Association, American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, American Lung Association and other concerned organizations and citizens of Arizona founded the Coalition for Tobacco-Free Arizona in January of 1993. The coalition quickly created a statewide movement that resulted in Arizona becoming only the third state in the country to have statewide tobacco education and prevention programs funded by a state tax on the sale of tobacco products. These programs have saved thousands of lives by helping reduce tobacco consumption 21% among Arizona adults. They have prevented non-smoking Arizonans from having to eat and breathe in smoke-filled restaurants in cities like Tucson, Flagstaff and Mesa. And they have shared the lessons of success with other states to help save fellow Americans.
