April, 2005: The Power Prism: A Model for Planning, Executing and Evaluating Advocacy
Campaigns
Lori Fresina, Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids
Attendees took an in-depth look at and application of the Power Prism, a model for planning, executing and evaluating advocacy campaigns presented by Lori Fresina of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids. The Power Prism's six advocacy elements are the very same tools employed by any entity that tries to advance its agenda through advocacy. Participants learned about the six advocacy elements of the model and how to use them dynamically to succeed in their goals.

During this training, presenters provided an overview on grant-writing basics, shared research methods for finding funding opportunities, demonstrated the grant process through one or two case studies and discussed the key challenges facing grant writers and ways to overcome them.

Oct. 2004: Working with the Media
No-Cost Strategies for Working with Media

What Works with Counter Tobacco Media Campaigns 
Dr. Eusebio Alvaro, Claremont Graduate University, Claremont California
Dr. Alvaro and Laurie Thomas provided us with a practical discussion on what works when approaching and interacting with the media. The training objectives included:
- Identifying four strategies for implementing no-cost media campaigns that promote tobacco prevention programs and increase utilization of tobacco treatment services
- Developing creative key messages to advance programs and services through local media and to know which methods are effective and which are not
- Understanding the components of what makes a successful counter tobacco media campaign
- providing examples/case studies of successful counter tobacco media campaigns
- Understanding what works with media to implement effective social change strategies over the long term
- Understanding the criteria for a successful counter tobacco media campaign from and evaluation perspective
April 24, 2004: Secondhand Smoke, Worksite Policies & City Ordinances: A Panel Discussion
In April, CTFA hosted a panel discussion on secondhand smoke, worksite
policies and city ordinances.
- Assistant City Attorney Andrew Ching from the
City of Tempe discussed his work with Tempe businesses to implement the 2002
ordinance. Along with Mr. Ching, Assistant Chief Jay Spradling from Tempe Police spoke about enforcement of the ordinance.
- Melynn Wakeman, Supervisor of Pulmonary Services at Mayo, shared Mayo's process for implementing its worksite policy within the healthcare environment.
- Eileen Ward, Assistant
Vice President Human Resources for USAA's Phoenix Operations discussed her
company's recent decision to implement a smokefree worksite policy.
- Debbie Reynolds with MACTUPP spoke about working with companies on worksite policies.
- Leslie Horton gave an overview of the AZ Healthlinks project being used in Prescott to assist business with compliance of its recently passed ordinance.
Training Objectives:
- To present an overview of smokefree worksite policies within different settings
- To understand the process behind implementing smokefree worksite policies
- To present an understanding of initial implementation of smokefree city ordinances
- To present an understanding of ongoing enforcement of smokefree city ordinances
